An expansion joint on the north end of the bridge was broken

Emergency bridge repairs care again causing a traffic headache in the northbound lanes of I-35 at the Christopher "Kit" Bond Bridge over the Missouri River.

Those headaches started Thursday afternoon when emergency crews noticed damage to a piece of the bridge's surface. Engineers quickly determined an expansion joint on the north end of the bridge suffered damage. Emergency repairs were needed.

Crews were able to reopen I-35, which serves as a main route into Kansas City's Northland from downtown, shortly before the start of Thursday's evening commute. But, Thursday's repairs were just a stopgap.

Crews announced Friday afternoon that engineers would again be closing part of the bridge, this time two northbound lanes, to continue repair work on the damaged expansion joint.

This closure is expected to last through Sunday.

A photo shared by MoDOT Thursday showed apparent damage to the surface of the bridge.

In a new photo posted Friday, it appears as if a large section of metal used to cover that expansion joint had been sheared off.
