Observations: Detroit Lions worked over by Colts for much of Day 1

Observations: Detroit Lions surge on big Day 2 against Indianapolis Colts

There were two jam-packed days of practices in Westfield, Indiana. And MLive’s Lions beat has you covered with a pair of joint observations covering the happenings from both fields at the Grand Park Sports Campus.

Dungeon of Doom ‘Hard Knocks’ recap: D’Andre Swift, Malcolm Rodriguez get spotlight in Episode 2

As if that wasn’t enough, HBO’s latest episode of “Hard Knocks” dropped earlier in the week. This time, it was more about the players, focusing on running back D’Andre Swift and rookie linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez. There were some solid Duce Staley, Aaron Glenn and Campbell moments too, of course.

Rookie Malcolm Rodriguez turns red-hot training camp into starting spot against Colts

Speaking of Rodriguez, the sixth-round rookie’s hot camp continued down into the cornfields of Indiana. Rodriguez worked with the first-team defense through the pair of joint practices.

Former Michigan stars Aidan Hutchinson, Kwity Paye savor reunion at Lions-Colts practices

It was the first time the pair talked in a bit, thanks to Aidan Hutchinson accidentally blocking Kwity Paye’s number. Hutchinson said, “I thought he was ghosting me, but we figured out the source,” Paye responded with, “I was texting him back. I was texting him back paragraphs.”

Why Levi Onwuzurike was left home, while Jameson Williams made trip for Detroit Lions

“I know why you’re asking it,” Campbell told MLive before the second joint practice. “Look, every day that he’s (Onwuzurike) not in there, it certainly is not helping. It doesn’t help him and it doesn’t help us as a team. However, it is what it is and it’s not his fault. And so all we can ask him to do is just continue to treat it, and our guys are working with him and he is getting better. Certainly not at the pace he wants it to be, but he is getting better and he’s working through it. So that’s all we can ask, ‘Hey man, get healthy and then we’ll go from there.’”

TE Devin Funchess leaves joint practice with apparent shoulder injury; Halapoulivaati Vaitai OK

The Lions sound like they’re taking it safe with Devin Funchess, who suffered an injury on the first day against the Colts. Vaitai, who left Monday’s practice early, was deemed OK by head coach Dan Campbell.

Lions’ D’Andre Swift, fueled by Duce Staley’s tough love, sets 2022 goals sky high

“Guy like him that’s going to be on me hard like that, push me to my limits and make sure I can get the best out of myself. Can’t ask for nothing else.” Swift then set his goals at the top of the mountain, saying he wants to hit 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards.

Lions’ Jamaal Williams trucks through Colts for score, then leaves with bucket of anime gifts

Detroit Lions running back Jamaal Williams left his mark on joint practices against the Indianapolis Colts with a thunderous touchdown and visceral scream. He then left with a bucket of anime gifts from fans in on-brand fashion.

“Shoot, I’m just getting ready for the season. Just letting people know, you know? There may be a thud, but I’m getting in the end zone,” Williams said. “I’m getting in the end zone. That’s it. They ain’t going to stop me. I’m sorry. I’m still turnt just a little bit.”
