STATEWIDE — The Mills Administration announced an expansion of MaineCare dental coverage for adults, increasing reimbursement rates for providers across the state Wednesday afternoon.
MaineCare currently covers 1 in 4 people in the state.
Starting July 1, more than 217,000 MaineCare members who are aged 21 and older will be automatically enrolled in the new dental coverage benefit plan.
Gov. Mills said the expansion comes as $45 million was invested in oral health in the biennial budget, after a year long joint effort between Maine Department of Health and Human Services and Speaker of the House Ryan Feacteau’s bill, LD 996.
Mills said providing preventative and routine dental care will improve the health and wellness of thousands of Mainers .
“We had too many adults who delayed dental care because of costs, who didn’t take care of their teeth or who ended up having more worse problems because of it. We think that providing preventative and routine dental care will save money because they wouldn’t have to go to the emergency room or unneeded emergency procedures,” said Jeanne Lambrew.
Lambrew said the expansion covers a variety of dental services including cleanings, fillings, root canals, and other critical oral health services.
