March 30 (Renewables Now) - Queensland government-owned CS Energy will build a 100-MW/200-MWh grid-scale battery near Chinchilla to support further expansion of its renewable energy assets as the state targets 50% renewable energy by 2030, it was announced on Wednesday.
The AUD-150-million (USD 112m/EUR 101m) project will be located next to the coal-fired Kogan Creek Power Station and make use of the site’s grid connection, water, land and workforce.
The battery will consist of Tesla Megapacks and is expected to come online in late 2023. Construction is set to start later in 2022 upon finalisation of development approvals.
Queensland’s Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Mick de Brenni said the state government “is moving quickly to invest in storage solutions that enable the continued uptake of renewables, especially rooftop solar, so more Queenslanders can enjoy the savings.”
