Crispy chicken tenders are the highlight at Raising Cane's, which is opening in Oakland Thursday.

Berkeley’s Raising Cane’s fanatics will have to wait just a bit longer to get their chicken finger fix.

The franchise’s second East Bay location, planned for 2580 Bancroft Way, is no longer in the works, as reported by SFGATE. (SFGATE and The San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but operate independently.) Raising Cane’s originally planned for a franchise on the bottom floor of a large student housing project across the street from the UC Berkeley campus.

Raising Cane’s spokesperson Julia Doyle told SFGATE via email that Raising Cane’s is actively looking for another Berkeley site that is a better fit. Plans for the upcoming Hayward location are still underway, with the storefront at 26231 Mission Blvd. slated for an early 2024 opening.

The Louisiana chain has seen an explosive expansion in California in recent years. Raising Cane’s first East Bay location opened its doors in Oakland, at 8430 Edgewater Drive this July, driving hoards of “Caniacs” — the company’s nickname for its die-hard fans — on opening day. The first location in the Bay Area opened in Vacaville this May, with folks lining up for the sought-after fried chicken strips as well.
